Inviting children into the world of literacy is an act of social justice. In the readings for this week, the unique concept of creating explicit invitations for children to explore this world is discussed. Most of the books you have read throughout this course examine a variety of questions about social relationships, power, privilege and inequity. However, invitations are not limited to book format but can be expanded to include the New Literacies and other formats that provide opportunities to develop the cognitive, social and emotional development of children. As you create your Reading Invitation, use what you have learned about identifying materials that are developmentally appropriate for children.
