WHY READ?
Walt Disney: "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island."
Why do you read and why are we all teachers of reading regardless of whether we are teaching students in elementary or secondary school? The attached reading discusses the many values of reading as does the video. For this week's assignment, you will be creating a visual reading autobiography that explores "you" as a reader. Use the connection prompts, listed under the Reading below, to help frame your Autobiography.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Read ----
1. Leland, C., Lewison, M. Harste, J. (2013). Teaching children's literature: it's critical! New York, NY: Routledge. pp. 3-15.
2. Keifer, B. (2011) Valuing children's literature from: a brief introduction to children's literature.
As you read these pages, think about:
*What values does reading hold for you personally?
*What experiences in your past helped form who you are as a reader and whether you like or dislike reading?
*If you love reading, how do you think this will help support your future students?
*If you don't like to read or make time to read, how do you think this might impact your future students?
*Use your responses to the above question prompts to guide your Reading Autobiography.
